In recent years, we have observed a growing trend in the application of bacteriophages in aquaculture, which experiences high losses from bacterial diseases every year.

This review provides a current overview of the state of bacteriophage therapy for the treatment and prevention of infections in the aquatic environment. Since it is still largely in the scientific stage, there are some limitations that may prevent effective therapy. Therefore, specific properties of bacteriophages have been described that may work for or against their successful use in treatment.

We highlighted aspects that must be considered: phage specificity, bacterial resistance, safety, host organism immune response, formulation, administration and stability of phage preparations, as well as the impact of bacteriophages on the environment. The greatest challenge to overcome is finding the right balance between the desired and problematic properties of bacteriophages.

Finally, manufacturers of bacteriophages may face challenges with regulatory approval. Even though there are still some technical limitations associated with the worldwide use of bacteriophage therapy, it was concluded that it can be successfully applied in aquaculture.

Further details at https://www.mdpi.com/2079-6382/9/6/301/htm

Translation of the source:
Growing Trend of Fighting Infections in Aquaculture Environment—Opportunities and Challenges of Phage Therapy
by Justyna D.
