VAP is characterized by a high mortality rate (20%) and generally prolongs the patient\u2019s time on mechanical ventilation and in the intensive care unit. The causative agents of VAP are often Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus, which frequently exhibit multidrug resistance to antibiotics.  <\/p>\n<p>The phage preparation for inhaled use in patients with VAP was developed by the biotechnology company Pherecydes Pharma and tested by scientists at the Respiratory Disease Research Center of the University of Tours, France.<\/p>\n<p>In preclinical studies in an animal model of lung infections, the efficacy of inhaled (nebulized) administration of the phage preparation against Pseudomonas aeruginosa was demonstrated. In the study, the reduction in mortality in mice after a single inhaled administration of the phage preparation was comparable to intravenous or inhaled administration of antibiotics. It was also shown that the bacterial load in the lungs of pigs was reduced by 99% after inhaled administration of the phage preparation.  <\/p>\n<p>Due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, the number of patients requiring intensive care has increased significantly. This has led to an increase in the incidence of VAP, and the search for new therapies for VAP is more relevant than ever. Phage therapies against Pseudomonas aeruginosa will be available in French hospitals this year (for other indications).
