How exactly do phages combat bacteria?

Phages work very specifically and only target a very specific type of bacteria, for example, Staphylococcus aureus. This is a germ that can cause pneumonia, among other things, and is increasingly resistant to antibiotics. Phages recognize the surface structure of bacteria, so-called receptors, and bind to them. This can be imagined as a “key-lock principle.” They then pierce the bacterial surface and inject their genetic material into the bacterium. The bacterium then produces many phages itself and eventually bursts under the pressure of the new phage generation. This irrevocably destroys the bacterial cell.

Antibiotics are increasingly failing to combat germs because bacteria have become resistant.
