First therapeutic application of bacteriophages in Austria
Phage cocktail alleviated Type 2 diabetes by reshaping the gut microbiota and reducing proinflammatory cytokines
The application of bacteriophages offers a promising option for the treatment of bacterial infectious diseases. Especially for patients who have developed resistance to antibiotics, the therapeutic use of these special viruses opens up new treatment possibilities. At the University Clinic for Thoracic Surgery of AKH Vienna and MedUni Vienna, in cooperation with the Clinical Department for Infections and Tropical Medicine, a patient was successfully treated therapeutically with inhaled bacteriophages for the first time in Austria outside of a study.
